About Sulphur

Sulphur sits on I-10 about 9 miles west of Lake Charles, roughly a 16-minute drive without traffic, between Westlake and Vinton. It had 21,809 residents in the 2020 Census and uses ZIP codes 70663 and 70665.

The city's name comes from its history. Sulfur was found in a salt dome here in 1867, but quicksand made mining it deadly until Herman Frasch's hot-water process brought the first molten sulfur to the surface on Christmas Eve, 1894. The Union Sulphur Company built the town, and Sulphur incorporated in 1914. When the Cities Service (now Citgo) refinery opened in 1943, the Maplewood and Hollywood neighborhoods grew up to house refinery workers. Today the city includes old Sulphur, Hollywood, Maplewood and Northwest Sulphur, with Carlyss and Choupique just outside city limits. Most new building is happening south of town toward Carlyss and near I-10.
